"Ex-Girlfriend"
by No Doubt
written by Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont and Tony Kanal
from the album RETURN OF SATURN, 2000
transcribed Feb 14, 2001
NOTE: all 5 chords played in lowest position, unless otherwise noted.
*************************************************************************
Pre-Chorus/ Main Riff
e:--8----7---5---3--|--2---0--[-4---1-]--|
B:--10---8---7---5--|--4---1--[-4---2-]--| (last time you play it,
G:------------------|--------------------| leave off the part in
D:------------------|--------------------| the [brackets])
A:------------------|--------------------|
E:------------------|--------------------|
CHORUS:
(palm-mute the chords except the last time)
E5 B5 C5 C5
F#5 C5 B5 B5
he also throws in some kind of funky-sounding distorted chords,
more or less at the end of each line, but I don't know how to
play those. If anyone does and can explain it in email, please
let me know.
VERSE:
i think the chords are played on a keyboard
NOTE: although I think it could be played by a keyboard, one
part you can play (only) during the second verse:
e:---12po0------12-12-12po0----|
B:-----------------------------| play it twice or something
G:-----------------------------| over the background chords
D:-----------------------------|
A:-----------------------------|
E:-----------------------------|
Post-Chorus (kind of distorted)
"and i'm
another ex-g/f..." (repeat)
e:------------------------------|---------------------------------|
B:---5-----0------5-----0-------|----4----0---[-4----0--]---------|
G:*-----------------------------|--------------------------------*|
D:*-----------------------------|--------------------------------*|
A:------------------------------|---------------------------------|
E:------------------------------|---------------------------------|
(leave off bracket part, very last time)
BRIDGE:
I'm not positive on this part, but something like this:
E5, hard a bunch of times on the 6th string,
then play E5 on the 5th string for a few measures
the post-chorus played after the bridge sounds a little different,
like maybe he is sort of picking notes out of Em played on the
5th string
E A D G B e
7 7 9 8 8 7
